Newcastle Airport first opened for business in 1935 and has over an 80 year period experienced significant changes. In the 1950's Scheduled Services totalled 35 per week. In the 1970's passenger figures were at 700,000 and the first Jumbo from America landed. In the 1980's an £8 million development saw a three - level terminal building, and in the 1990's record-breaking passenger figures of 1.67 million were achieved. A major £27 million pound expansion took place in 2000 and in 2001 49% of shares were sold to Copenhagen Airports. New and improved terminal facilities were opened in August 2004 and in 2005 passenger figures were an incredible 5.4 million.

Passenger numbers have continued to rise and the Charter holiday market in Newcastle continues to grow and buck the UK trend, whilst the sought-after business passenger makes up a quarter of our travellers. On a busy day, over 35,000 passengers now fly to and from 85 different destinations worldwide. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) published figures in April 2005 highlighting that Newcastle International Airport was the fastest-growing of the ten largest regional UK airports.

2006 will see 5.95 Million passengers and the rate of passenger growth is set to continue with projections outlined in the Airports Masterplan predicting 9.5 million passengers by 2016.
